FULL BIO
Sophia Mitiku (b.1995, California) is a Korean-Ethiopian singer, song-writer and sound artist based in Helsinki. Her work delves into a wide range of post-genre exploration resulting in contemporary productions of RnB, pop, trip hop, and electronic music. Through experimentation of voice, performance, and installation Mitiku creates immersive sonic worlds through both digital and physical mediums.
Her debut album ‘Copacabana’ was released independently in 2022 and received praise as a distinguished new voice in the Finnish music scene. It was her debut as both artist and producer, showcasing her ability to compose innovative yet nostalgic soundscapes with delicate and sincere lyrical prose. She was nominated for Newcomer of the Year at the Finnish Indie Awards and the album received an honorary mention in the Pop Experimental category from the renowned GigaHertz Award for Experimental Music and Sound Art.
In Sophia’s artistic work she studies the materiality of sound through themes of migration, memory, ritual, and change - highlighting the dynamic interplay of tradition and modernity as they shape and redefine cultural landscapes. Nostalgia and surrealism are strong visual and thematic concepts in her work, bridging the dissonance of parallel and liminal spaces.
